This is a very late winter flowering, medium-sized, stem-less aloe. Multiple, branched inflorescences start showing around midwinter, and the speed of their development depends largely on the daytime temperature at the time. The first bi-coloured, red-to-cream racemes can open their first flowers as early as the last winter month (normally younger plants) or as late as early spring (established plants grown in the open), particularly in colder areas. The more inflorescences produced, the closer to the rosette the racemes. This creates a very neat and unique package. Note the unopened inflorescence in the picture, taken in early spring.   The leaves are reminiscent of a small Aloe Wickensii with white spines. Stem shoots may appear from under the plant as it reaches maturity. As with other stemless aloes that produce stem shoots at ground level, these are best removed unless the gardener is happy to keep an eye open for aphid and other pest infestations. The plant can easily manage up to 3 stem shoots that will eventually grow into flowering rosettes.  "Spring Prize" is happy as a pot or garden subject.
